15 Things I've Learned Since Becoming a Mom

I have learned a lot since I became a mom - about kids, my husband, myself and the world around me. I think I could write for days about this. Today, I have decided to share 15 of my favorites.

1. Zip sleepers really are the only thing a baby needs to wear for the first 6 months of life. It is perfectly reasonable to stretch this time period even longer for your second child. This is not the first time I have said this and I feel so strongly about it that I can promise it won't be the last.

2. If you have a child that wears the mittens or hair clips you put on them - you are very lucky. And your child is both warmer and more stylish than mine.

3. Having children has made my memory much worse. I am always reading really great articles and tips in my parenting magazines that I am so sure I will remember when I need them. After several instances of not remembering the details and also not being able to relocate the magazine, I stated tearing out the pages of articles and now I have a little file full of great parenting advise. Hopefully, I won't forget where I put the file...

4. Infant socks are really cute. That is their only purpose because they certainly do not stay on those tiny feet. One of the many reasons why #1 is so very important.

5. I am physically capable of falling asleep sitting up while rocking an infant's vibrator seat with my foot and saying, "shush, shush, shush."

6. I will never be able to keep the play food and dishes organized...but I will also never stop trying.

7. The laundry is seriously never-ending.

8. It is absolutely imperative to purchase Halloween costumes in September and Christmas dresses in November. If I wait until the months that the holidays actually fall in, there will be nothing left and I will be forced to go to multiple stores looking for these items in a desperate and frantic search.

9. Crawling children make the best vacuum cleaners and taste testers. They can seriously find the tiniest little speck of food, dust or fur on the floor. Once this speck is found, it is very important to eat it.

10. The more I try to rush my child, the slower she will go.

11. A child can be go from having the absolute worst melt-down screaming temper tantrum to being perfectly happy in a matter of seconds.

12. I expected it to take a really long time to get the children ready and out the door. What was unexpected is how common it is for us to have to turn around while still on our street because I realized I forgot at least 3 essential items.

13. My children have taught me an unbelievable amount of stuff about myself. I had no idea the facial expressions or hand gestures I made until my children began to mimic them. This is both cute and terrifying at the same time.

14. The crayons are going to break, the paint is going to get on the floor and the Play-Doh is going to get mixed. I was able to have a lot more fun during these activities once I accepted that fact.

15. Having children causes all emotions to be amplified. It is unexplainable until you have children but the love and joy, the fear and sadness are more intense than I could have ever imagined.

I was surprised to learn many of the things on this list. Be it silly, challenging or practical; these things are, for me, part of the many wonderful lessons of motherhood.

    1. Thanks, Emily! The toddler and pre-schooler are not so interested in the organization but this is just not something I cannot turn off! Glad I'm not the only one! :)
